Card upgrades
Cards can be upgraded in the Yard. Upgrading a card requires at least two copies of that same card and consumes Essence.
How it works
Essence can be earned through missions or by recycling duplicate cards. This makes duplicates relevant both as material for a card upgrade and as a way to obtain Essence; the evidence does not specify upgrade effects or costs.
The tradeoff
An upgrade requires duplicate copies and Essence, so both are prerequisites.
