Understand Chainmail Chestplate
Useful when…
- Wear for five armor points in the chest slot.
- Choose among the listed protection enchantments according to their basic damage-reduction effects.
- Repair with iron ingots or another chainmail chestplate at an anvil while preserving enchantments.
Armor and enchantments
The chestplate equips in the chest slot and provides five armor points. It has 240 maximum durability. Protection, Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection increase damage reduction; the four are mutually exclusive. Thorns deals returning damage to attackers. Unbreaking grants a chance to negate durability consumption, and Mending repairs the chestplate when you obtain experience.
Repair and trims
In an anvil, an iron ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down. Combining two chestplates in an anvil also repairs them; both anvil methods preserve enchantments. Crafting or grindstone combination adds their durability plus 5% of maximum durability, but does not keep their enchantments. Armor trims can be applied with a smithing template and an ingot or crystal; they do not change gameplay strength.
Java Edition acquisition
In Java Edition, an armorer journeyman may offer a chainmail chestplate, eligible mobs wearing armor may drop their chestplate, and woodland mansion chests can contain one. Mob-worn drops are usually badly damaged and may be enchanted.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The chestplate provides five armor points and has 240 maximum durability to maintain.
- The four protection enchantments are mutually exclusive.
- Crafting or grindstone repair combinations lose enchantments; anvil repair preserves them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to combine protection-family enchantments that are mutually exclusive.
- Repairing an enchanted chestplate through crafting or a grindstone combination and losing its enchantments.
- Assuming armor trims increase protection.
