Understand Compass
Useful when…
- Navigate toward the Overworld world spawn.
- Craft an empty map or a Recovery Compass.
- Use it on a lodestone to make a compass that tracks that lodestone.
What does it point toward?
A normal compass points horizontally toward the world spawn in the Overworld; changing the world spawn changes its target. Use a compass on a lodestone to bind it to that location. The needle spins randomly if the compass is in another dimension from its target, or if its lodestone target is broken. A disconnected lodestone compass must be used on a lodestone again to reconnect it.
When is it useful?
A compass is useful for returning to world spawn and is a crafting ingredient for an empty map and a Recovery Compass. In Bedrock Edition it can also add a location marker to a map, but this article describes Java Edition 26.3 mechanics. Lodestone compasses are useful for a chosen location when you can remain in the target's dimension.
What should you keep in mind?
Compasses and lodestone compasses do not stack together; lodestone compasses stack only when they point to the same lodestone. A Java Edition compass can receive Curse of Vanishing, which makes it disappear on death. The basic compass has no durability or repair material listed, so it does not need routine repair.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- A normal compass only tracks world spawn and only works as a directional guide in the Overworld.
- A lodestone compass can track a chosen location, but becomes unreliable across dimensions and disconnects when its target lodestone is broken.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on a normal compass for direction in the Nether or End; its needle spins there.
- Assuming a lodestone compass reconnects automatically after its lodestone is broken.
