Understand Copper Hoe
Useful when…
- Turn grass blocks or dirt into farmland.
- Convert coarse dirt to dirt, or rooted dirt to dirt while yielding hanging roots.
- Break plant blocks, Nether fungi, and sculk blocks more quickly.
Uses and durability
The hoe has 190 maximum durability and a listed speed of 5 for blocks tagged as mineable with a hoe. Tilling grass or dirt into farmland, changing coarse dirt to regular dirt, and loosening rooted dirt are supported uses; the rooted dirt action yields hanging roots. Tilling is effectively instantaneous and consumes one durability. Breaking plant blocks, Nether fungi, or sculk consumes one durability; other blocks cost zero if they break instantly by hand, otherwise one.
Tilling conditions
Mycelium and podzol cannot be tilled directly; first convert either to a dirt path with a shovel. The space above the target must be clear, so snow layers, torches, or other blocks can prevent tilling. A plant on top of a block can also prevent the hoe from working.
Enchantments and repairs
Efficiency increases mining speed; Unbreaking can reduce durability consumption, and Mending repairs the hoe when experience is obtained. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive. An anvil repair with a copper ingot restores 47 durability, which is 25% of maximum durability rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Anvil combination also preserves enchantments; crafting or grindstone combination adds the two hoes' durability plus 5%.
Crafting
A copper hoe can be crafted from a copper ingot and a stick. Its listed speed, tilling actions, and supported block-harvesting uses describe what it does; the reference does not establish that it is an upgrade over other hoes.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Tilling is quick, but fails on some ground types and when the target lacks clear space above it.
- Tilling and non-instant block breaking consume the same durability pool.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to till mycelium or podzol directly instead of converting it to a dirt path first.
- Leaving a block above the target and expecting tilling to work.
- Trying to work a block that has a plant on top.
