Understand Copper Shovel
Useful when…
- Dig blocks tagged as mineable with a shovel.
- Break snow or snow blocks to collect snowballs without Silk Touch.
- Create dirt paths or extinguish campfires.
- Use as a backup melee weapon in Java Edition.
Digging and other uses
The shovel is correct for drops from blocks tagged mineable with a shovel and has listed speed 5 for those blocks. Breaking a block that takes time uses one durability; instant-breaking blocks use none. Breaking snow or snow blocks yields snowballs without Silk Touch. Using the shovel to create a dirt path uses durability; campfire extinguishing is also supported, but no durability cost is specified for it.
Java melee use
The +2.5 attack-damage modifier adds to the player's documented base damage for 3.5 damage per hit. The shovel's attack-speed modifier corresponds to one-second recovery, and each attack costs two durability. This makes it usable in a pinch, with a slower attack cycle and durability cost to consider.
Durability, repair, and enchantments
Maximum durability is 190. An anvil repair with a copper ingot restores 62 durability, and anvil repair preserves enchantments. Efficiency increases mining speed, Unbreaking can prevent durability consumption, and Mending repairs the shovel when experience is gained. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- It combines digging utility with snow collection and path creation, but block work and path creation consume durability.
- Its Java melee damage is 3.5 per hit under the documented base damage, but recovery takes one second and attacks use two durability.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting proper drops from blocks outside its correct shovel-mineable rule.
- Assuming campfire extinguishing consumes durability; no such cost is specified.
- Expecting Fortune and Silk Touch to work together.
