Understand Creeper Head
Useful when…
- Reduce creeper detection range while wearing it.
- Place it as a decorative head block in one of its supported orientations.
- Use it above a note block for the creeper priming sound.
- Craft a firework star with gunpowder and any dye.
Wearing the head
The Creeper Head equips in the head slot. While worn, it reduces creeper detection range to 50% of normal, stacking with the range reductions from sneaking and Invisibility. The reading also states that wearing a mob head hides the player's location from other players using the locator bar; the Java component data includes a hidden waypoint transmit range modifier.
Placement and crafting uses
As a block, it can face 16 directions when placed on top of a block and four directions on a side. Placing it above a note block makes that note block play a creeper priming sound when activated. It can be crafted with gunpowder and any dye into a firework star.
Limits and enchantments
No durability value is listed for the head. Its creeper-disguise effect concerns creeper detection specifically. Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing can be applied only through an anvil.
Obtaining
In Java Edition, a creeper head drops from a creeper killed by a charged creeper's explosion. If an explosion destroys a placed creeper head, it always drops as an item.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The creeper detection reduction is useful in situations involving creepers, while wearing the head occupies the head slot.
- It also has decorative, note-block, and firework crafting uses.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming its detection effect applies to mobs other than creepers.
- Describing locator-bar concealment as an effect of the creeper-specific detection reduction.
- Claiming an absolute durability property when no durability value is listed.
