Understand Diamond Spear
Useful when…
- Jab targets from extended melee reach while grounded.
- Charge into a target after building speed when a dismount may be useful.
- Craft a durable spear using a diamond and a stick.
Jab reach and recovery
The jab is a grounded attack with a stabbing animation that lasts 21 ticks. That animation duration does not specify the attack cooldown; Java jab recovery follows the normal attack cooldown mechanic. The survival reach ranges from 2.0 to 4.5 blocks. The 6.5-block maximum is creative reach, not survival reach.
Charge conditions
Hold the use key to lower the spear, then collide with a target. Charge damage depends on velocity. The listed kinetic damage condition has a minimum relative speed of 4.6 and a maximum duration of 200 ticks. Dismounting requires a speed of at least 10.0 within 60 ticks; knockback requires at least 5.1 within 130 ticks. The reference says a charge held long enough enters a dropped-down state where attacks no longer deal knockback but still deal full damage, so the 200-tick condition should not be read as a guarantee that attacks after that point deal no damage.
Durability, repair, and obtaining
The spear has 1,561 durability and is repairable with diamond. It can be crafted from a diamond and a stick. In Java, bastion remnant treasure chests can contain ordinary or damaged enchanted diamond spears, and End City chests can contain enchanted ones; these are possible loot sources, not guaranteed acquisitions.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Its extended jab reach supports grounded melee, while charge effects depend on velocity and separate timing conditions.
- The creative reach figure does not describe survival combat reach.
- The spear has 1,561 durability and uses diamond for repair.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the 21-tick animation duration as the attack cooldown.
- Treating 6.5 blocks as survival reach; the survival maximum is 4.5 blocks.
- Assuming the charge deals a fixed amount of damage or that its dismount, knockback, and damage conditions are interchangeable.
