Understand Elytra
Useful when…
- Glide between locations or descend toward a chosen landing point.
- Use firework rockets during flight to gain speed and altitude.
- Make careful rooftop or other small-target landings by slowing with a sharp turn.
How flight works
Jump while in midair to deploy the wings. You steer by turning and pitching your aim: descending builds speed, while climbing slows you. Aiming at the horizon gives the best glide ratio stated here, about 10.06 horizontal blocks per block of starting altitude, excluding the time and altitude needed to build speed. Sharp direction changes shed speed quickly. Firework rockets used while gliding propel you in the direction faced at 33.5 blocks per second for a duration based on the rocket's flight duration; rockets do not consume Elytra durability.
Landing and collision risks
Plan a shallow approach and avoid pitching too steeply upward: at 30° above the horizon airspeed is at its minimum, and higher pitches can stall; a 90° pitch becomes free-fall. A landing at a sufficiently steep angle can cause fall damage. High-speed collisions with blocks can cause kinetic damage; horizontal surfaces such as ceilings do not cause this collision damage. A hairpin turn over a target can reduce speed for a more precise landing, but sudden turns also sacrifice travel speed.
Durability and upkeep
Gliding consumes one durability point per second. The 432-point maximum corresponds to 7 minutes 12 seconds of flight without enchantments; at 1 durability the wings stop working until repaired, but do not fully break. An anvil repair with phantom membrane restores 108 points per membrane, and combining two Elytra also restores durability; both anvil methods preserve enchantments. Unbreaking III can extend flight time to about 28 minutes 48 seconds. Mending repairs the wings when you obtain experience. Elytra cannot be enchanted at an enchanting table.
Equipment and practical tradeoffs
Elytra occupy the chestplate slot, so equipping them means giving up whatever chest-slot armor you would otherwise wear. Consider them when flight is more useful than that armor for the trip, and repair them before they reach their one-durability disabled state. They are found in End-city End ships, displayed in an item frame in the treasure room; a shulker guards the ship along with its two loot chests.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- They enable controlled flight but replace chest-slot armor while worn.
- Gliding steadily consumes durability; repair or Mending support matters for frequent use.
- Fast descents and powered flight improve speed or altitude, while sharp turns and steep pitches can undermine control.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until durability reaches 1 to prepare a repair; the Elytra stop working at that point.
- Pitching too high to try to climb, which can stall the glide.
- Making abrupt turns when trying to preserve speed or maximize distance.
- Assuming rockets wear down Elytra durability or that Feather Falling prevents Elytra collision damage.
