Understand Fishing Rod
Useful when…
- Fish by watching for the bite and reeling in at the right time.
- Pull eligible mobs, items, vehicles, or other listed entities toward you.
- Use the hook to activate wooden or weighted pressure plates.
Fishing and casting
Cast into water and watch for bubble particles approaching the bobber; reel in when the particles reach it and a bite occurs. The catch can be fish, junk, or possibly treasure. In Java, the rod can also be crafted with a carrot or warped fungus to make the corresponding stick item; the rod must sit diagonally above the vegetable or fungus in the crafting arrangement.
Hooking and pulling entities
A rod can hook mobs and some other entities, including items and players in Java. Reeling pulls eligible hooked targets toward you without dealing damage. Reeling a mob or entity costs 5 durability; reeling in an item costs 3. The bobber can be at most 33 blocks from the player before a hooked target detaches. Boats, minecarts, armor stands, primed TNT, and falling blocks are among the listed pullable entities. Some entities can be hooked but cannot be reeled in; attempting to reel those still costs durability.
Durability and enchantment choices
The rod has 64 durability. For fishing, Lure reduces wait time and Luck of the Sea increases fishing luck; both can reach level III. Unbreaking III can reduce durability consumption, while Mending repairs the rod when you obtain experience. These are useful priorities if the rod sees frequent use. An anvil can combine rods while preserving their enchantments; crafting or grindstone combining damaged rods also adds 5% durability, but the provided description does not say those methods preserve enchantments.
Limits and secondary uses
The rod is not a damage tool: reeling a hooked entity does not deal damage. Do not assume every hookable target can be pulled, and remember that failed reel attempts against listed non-pullable targets still use durability. A Fishing Rod can also serve as furnace fuel for 1.5 items, regardless of its remaining durability, but this consumes the rod and gives up its fishing and utility uses.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Fishing provides varied catches, but requires waiting for a bite and timely reeling.
- Entity pulling is versatile but consumes durability, especially for mobs and other entities.
- Enchanting for shorter waits or improved fishing luck serves different aims; prioritize according to whether time or catch luck matters more.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reeling before the bobber is bitten instead of waiting for the approaching bubbles.
- Assuming a hooked target can always be dragged; some hookable entities cannot be reeled in.
- Repeatedly attempting to pull a non-pullable target and spending durability.
- Treating the rod as a weapon; its listed entity-pulling use does not deal damage.
