Understand Golden Boots
Useful when…
- Wear gold armor near piglins when you have not provoked or attacked them.
- Use Feather Falling for fall-damage reduction or a suitable movement enchantment for the route.
- Repair or enchant the boots if you plan to wear them regularly.
Armor and piglin behavior
Worn Golden Boots provide 1 armor point. Piglins do not attack players wearing gold armor unless provoked or attacked. Piglins are attracted to Golden Boots on the ground, inspect them, and then equip them.
Boot enchantments
The boots can receive Protection, Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, or Fire Protection up to level IV; those four are mutually exclusive. Feather Falling reduces fall damage. Depth Strider improves underwater movement, while Frost Walker leaves ice over water; those two are mutually exclusive. Soul Speed increases movement speed on soul sand. Unbreaking can negate some durability consumption, and Mending repairs the boots when experience is obtained.
Durability, repair, and trims
Maximum durability is 91. An anvil repair with a gold ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down (22 points), and preserves enchantments. Combining matching boots in an anvil also preserves enchantments; crafting or grindstone combination adds 5% durability. Armor trims change appearance and have no effect on gameplay or armor strength.
Obtaining
Golden Boots can be crafted from a gold ingot. The reference also lists them in bastion remnant and ruined portal loot, and as possible equipment worn by mobs. They can be smelted into a gold nugget, which consumes the boots.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- They provide 1 armor point; wearing gold armor has a situational interaction with piglins.
- Depth Strider and Frost Walker are mutually exclusive.
- An anvil repair restores 22 durability per gold ingot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming piglins remain passive after you provoke or attack them.
- Dropping the boots near piglins, which inspect and equip them.
- Trying to combine Depth Strider and Frost Walker.
- Expecting armor trims to improve protection.
