Understand Golden Pickaxe
Useful when…
- Quickly mining eligible stone and metal-based blocks.
- Using Efficiency for a short, speed-focused mining task.
- Using Fortune or Silk Touch when the desired block drops matter more than the pickaxe's limited durability.
Mining speed and drop conditions
In Java Edition, the pickaxe's tool rules give it a mining speed of 12.0 against blocks tagged as mineable with a pickaxe. Blocks marked incorrect for gold tools do not yield correct tool drops, so fast breaking does not guarantee the block's normal drops. Each block broken uses one durability point, except blocks with zero hardness, such as torches and flowers.
Enchantment and repair choices
Efficiency increases mining speed; Fortune III can increase block drops, while Silk Touch makes blocks drop themselves. Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be used together, so choose according to the blocks you want to collect. Unbreaking can reduce durability consumption, and Mending repairs the pickaxe when you obtain experience. An anvil can restore durability with gold ingots, each adding 25% of maximum durability rounded down, or combine two pickaxes; either method preserves enchantments. Combining two damaged pickaxes also adds 5% of maximum durability. The pickaxe can be made with a gold ingot and a stick.
Combat and durability limits
This is a poor choice as a Java combat weapon: it deals 2 damage per hit and takes about 0.85 seconds to recover between attacks. Attacks consume two durability points, so fighting wears it down faster than mining. With only 32 maximum durability, frequent combat or long mining sessions quickly exhaust it.
Practical cautions
Check whether the block is suitable for a gold pickaxe before relying on its drops. Do not expect Fortune and Silk Touch on the same pickaxe, and avoid spending its limited durability on routine combat. Piglins are attracted to golden pickaxes dropped on the ground and may pick them up after inspecting them.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- High speed against eligible pickaxe blocks comes with only 32 durability.
- Repairing with gold ingots or combining pickaxes can preserve enchantments, but requires additional materials or another pickaxe.
- Its low Java attack damage and durability cost per attack make it inefficient for combat.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming fast mining means correct drops from blocks marked incorrect for gold tools.
- Trying to combine Fortune and Silk Touch on one pickaxe.
- Using it for repeated combat without accounting for two durability points spent per attack.
