What is it good for?
The shovel is correct for drops on blocks tagged as mineable by shovel and has speed 12 on those blocks. It uses one durability per block broken, except blocks that break instantly. Using it on supported blocks to create a dirt path also costs one durability, and it can extinguish a campfire.
How should I handle its durability?
It has 32 maximum durability. An anvil repair with a gold ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments; two shovels can also be combined. Unbreaking can sometimes prevent durability loss, while Mending repairs it when you obtain experience. Efficiency improves mining speed. Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be applied together, so choose based on whether you want increased drops or the block itself.
Is it a weapon?
It can attack, but Java Edition’s listed attack speed modifier is -3, corresponding in the reference to a one-second recovery, and each weapon hit costs two durability. Its intended shovel work also spends durability, so relying on it for repeated combat shortens an already brief tool life.
When should I choose another tool?
It therefore does not support treating either as a shovel substitute. The Golden Shovel itself is a poor long-duration digging choice if you cannot maintain or replace it, because it has only 32 durability.
