Understand Iron Axe
Useful when…
- Breaking axe-mineable blocks faster than other tools.
- Stripping logs, wood blocks, and bamboo blocks.
- Removing wax from copper or reducing its oxidation by one stage.
- Using a high-damage Java attack or disabling a shield user's blocking for five seconds.
Tool work and durability
The axe has 250 durability and breaks axe-mineable blocks at speed 6.0. Breaking a block costs one durability point, except for blocks that break instantly. Stripping a log, wood block, or bamboo block also costs one point. Using it on waxed copper removes the wax; on unwaxed copper, it removes one oxidation level, at a cost of one durability point.
Java combat
The reading gives Java values of 9 damage per attack and 0.9 attack speed, with about 1.11 seconds of recovery. The component attack-damage modifier is 8.0; the reading's 9-damage figure is the Java attack value including the player's base damage. An axe attack on a shield user disables shield use for five seconds. Each attack costs two durability points.
Enchantments and repairs
Efficiency improves mining speed. Fortune and Silk Touch affect block drops and are mutually exclusive. Unbreaking can negate some durability use, and Mending repairs the axe when experience is obtained. The reading lists Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods as damage enchantments, but establishes enchanting-table availability for those enchantments only in Bedrock; it does not specify a Java acquisition method. An iron ingot in an anvil restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down. Crafting or grindstone combining two damaged axes adds their durability plus 5%; anvil combining is also described as preserving enchantments, with no 5% bonus stated. The axe is crafted from an iron ingot and a stick.
Choosing the axe
Use it for wood work, copper changes, or deliberate heavy attacks. Its slower recovery limits sustained damage compared with faster attacks, and weapon use consumes twice the durability of ordinary block breaking. Shield disruption can be useful against a shield user, but the axe itself does not block attacks.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The 250 durability supports routine tool work, but weapon attacks consume two points each.
- High damage per hit and shield disruption come with slower attack recovery.
- Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Java axe attacks are instant; the reading gives about 1.11 seconds of recovery.
- Ignoring the two durability points consumed per attack.
- Expecting Fortune and Silk Touch to work together.
- Applying the 5% combining bonus to anvil combination; the reading assigns it to crafting or grindstone combination.
