Understand Leather Cap
Useful when…
- Wear it while crossing powder snow if no other leather armor piece is equipped.
- Use it as an early helmet or apply Respiration and Aqua Affinity for underwater breathing and mining support.
What does it do?
The cap adds 1 armor point in the head slot and prevents freezing in powder snow. It has 55 maximum durability and can be dyed in Java Edition.
Which enchantments support specific tasks?
Respiration extends underwater breathing time, and Aqua Affinity increases underwater mining speed. Protection variants can improve damage reduction, but Protection, Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection are mutually exclusive. Choose the damage type or underwater function that matches the task.
How should you repair it?
Each leather used in an anvil restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Combining two caps in an anvil also preserves enchantments. Crafting or grindstone combination adds remaining durability plus 5% of maximum but discards enchantments.
What are its limits?
Its 1 armor point is a small defensive contribution. A trim is cosmetic and does not strengthen the cap. Curse of Binding prevents removal, so avoid equipping a bound cap if you need to change helmets freely.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The low armor value is offset by powder-snow protection and useful underwater enchantments.
- Enchantments survive anvil repairs but not crafting or grindstone combination.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a trim to add protection.
- Using a grindstone or crafting combination on an enchanted cap and expecting enchantments to remain.
- Equipping Curse of Binding without accounting for the inability to remove the cap.
