Understand Netherite Pickaxe
Useful when…
- Mine stone and metal-based materials that are effective against a pickaxe.
- Use Efficiency to increase mining speed, or choose Fortune or Silk Touch for the desired block drops.
- Upgrade an enchanted diamond pickaxe when the extra durability and efficiency warrant the ingot and template.
Mining and tier limits
The pickaxe tool component gives it speed 9 against blocks in the pickaxe-mineable category and marks other blocks as incorrect for netherite-tool drops. Its mining level is 4, functionally identical to level 3 for block access: there are no blocks it can mine that a diamond pickaxe cannot. Mining a block generally costs one durability; blocks with zero hardness, such as torches and flowers, cost none. Its maximum durability is 2,031.
When to upgrade and enchant
Smithing a diamond pickaxe with one netherite ingot and one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template increases durability by 30% and improves mining efficiency. The upgrade keeps enchantments, name, and other item data. Efficiency suits faster mining; Fortune increases drops, while Silk Touch makes blocks drop themselves. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive. Unbreaking and Mending can help manage wear on a frequently used pickaxe.
Repair and combat handling
An anvil repair with a netherite ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down; combining two pickaxes in an anvil also preserves enchantments. Crafting-grid or grindstone combinations add a 5% durability bonus but do not preserve enchantments. In Java combat, the pickaxe deals 6 HP per attack and has an attack-speed modifier of −2.8, taking about 0.85 seconds to recover. Treat that as incidental combat capability, not its main mining use.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The upgrade consumes an ingot and template for greater durability and mining efficiency, but does not unlock additional blocks over diamond.
- Fortune and Silk Touch serve different drop goals and cannot be combined.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting the netherite mining level to access blocks that diamond cannot mine.
- Combining Fortune and Silk Touch on one pickaxe.
- Using non-anvil repair on an enchanted pickaxe and expecting the enchantments to be retained.
