Understand Warped Fungus on a Stick
Useful when…
- Attracting a nearby strider toward you while holding the item.
- Steering a saddled strider across lava or other terrain.
- Boosting a strider for a stretch of travel when the extra speed is useful.
Steering and speed boosts
While held, the item attracts nearby striders within view. When riding a saddled strider, hold it while facing the direction you want to travel to steer the strider. Pressing the use control boosts speed. Each boost costs one durability point and lasts a random 140–980 game ticks (7–49 seconds). Striders can walk on lava, making them useful for Nether travel.
Durability, repair, and enchantments
The item has 100 durability and turns into a fishing rod when its durability reaches zero. Unbreaking can negate some durability consumption, Mending repairs it when experience is obtained, and Curse of Vanishing makes it disappear on death instead of dropping. Damaged items can be combined through crafting or a grindstone, adding their durability plus 5%; anvil combination is described as preserving enchantments, without a stated 5% bonus. To craft it, place the fishing rod diagonally above the warped fungus; a damaged fishing rod can also be used.
Planning strider travel
Boost duration varies from 7 to 49 seconds, and each boost costs one durability point. Track its condition if you rely on continued speed boosts. Mounted steering requires a saddled strider; the item also attracts nearby striders while held.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Each speed boost consumes one durability point, while its duration varies from 7 to 49 seconds.
- At zero durability, the item turns into a fishing rod.
- Repairing through combination requires another Warped Fungus on a Stick.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a speed boost to have a fixed duration.
- Forgetting that each boost costs one durability point.
- Reversing the crafting layout: the fishing rod goes diagonally above the warped fungus.
- Assuming anvil combination adds 5% durability.
