Understand Wooden Axe
Useful when…
- Break blocks in the axe-mineable group at tool speed 2.0 with correct drops.
- Strip logs, wood, and bamboo, or remove wax and reduce oxidation on copper.
- Repair it with wooden planks or combine damaged axes when preserving its use matters.
Mining and block work
The tool component gives speed 2.0 and correct drops for blocks in the axe-mineable group. Breaking a block costs 1 durability point, except blocks that break instantly cost none. Stripping a log, wood block, or bamboo block also costs 1 point and produces its stripped form.
Copper work and durability
On waxed copper, the axe removes the wax; on oxidized copper, it removes one oxidation level. Each action costs 1 durability point. The axe has a maximum durability of 59, shared across mining, stripping, copper work, and attacks.
Combat and repair
The main-hand modifiers are +6 attack damage and −3.2 attack speed; the damage modifier is an addition, not a complete damage total. The Java reference describes the axe’s damage as equivalent to a diamond sword, with a longer cooldown. It also says a wooden axe always disables a shield, while noting this behavior may be a bug. Attacking consumes 2 durability points. An anvil repair with a plank restores 25% of maximum durability rounded down, or 14 points at 59 maximum. Combining two damaged axes in crafting or a grindstone adds their durability plus 5%.
Enchantments and fuel
The item record lists 9 applicable enchantments, and the component lists enchantability 15. The supplied reference includes enchantments marked for Combat Tests or as sword-only; those entries do not establish that they apply to this axe in released Java 26.3. The reference also says the axe can be used as furnace fuel for one smelt, consuming it.
Crafting and found sources
The reference lists crafting with any planks and a stick. It also lists wooden axes in Abandoned Camp barrels, Bonus Chests, and Trial Chambers entrance chests.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Its 59 durability is spent across block breaking, stripping, copper work, and attacks; an attack costs 2 points.
- Tool speed 2.0 and correct drops apply to axe-mineable blocks, not all blocks.
- The reference’s shield-disabling statement carries a caveat that the behavior may be a bug.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating +6 attack damage as the full damage dealt.
- Assuming every enchantment mentioned in the reference applies to the Wooden Axe in released Java 26.3.
- Ignoring durability costs for attacks, stripping, or copper work.
