Understand Zombie Head
Useful when…
- Reduce zombie detection range while wearing it.
- Place it as a directional decoration or above a note block for a zombie ambient sound.
- Use it as a crafting ingredient for a creeper-face firework star.
What does wearing it do?
The Zombie Head equips in the head slot and reduces zombie detection range to 50% of normal. This stacks with the detection reductions from sneaking and Invisibility. It does not make the wearer undetectable, and the provided mechanics do not specify armor protection. Its enchantments are limited to Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing, both applied through an anvil.
How can I use it as a block?
Placed heads can face 16 directions on top of a block and four directions on a block's side. A Zombie Head above a note block makes it play a zombie ambient sound when activated. It can also be combined with gunpowder and any dye to craft a creeper-face firework star.
How is it obtained in survival?
A zombie drops its head when killed by a charged creeper's explosion. In Java, one charged creeper explosion can yield at most one mob head, with the eligible head chosen at random if multiple mobs are killed. The head has no durability value listed and stacks to 64.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Provides a specific stealth benefit against zombies, not general invisibility.
- Wearing it occupies the head slot and has no stated armor value.
- Its survival acquisition requires a charged creeper explosion.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the head prevents zombies from detecting you entirely; it halves detection range and stacks with other reductions.
- Expecting it to provide helmet armor protection.
- Expecting one charged creeper explosion to drop multiple heads in Java.
