Understand Critical Mutation
Useful when…
- Build up both critical stats through kills while using the Catabolyst.
- Use the grenade explosion against at least three enemies to avoid the stated reduction.
How does the stacking effect work?
Each kill increases both critical chance and critical damage. At rank 0, each kill adds 5%; at rank 3 it adds 20%; at rank 5 it adds 30%, with a 300% cap. The augment's description does not specify a separate duration for the accumulated bonus, so do not assume a timed decay.
What causes the reduction?
If the grenade explosion strikes fewer than three enemies, the bonus is reduced by 5% at rank 0, 20% at rank 3, or 30% at rank 5. That condition makes the augment less reliable when explosions hit isolated targets. The Catabolyst restriction is explicit; the mod is not described as compatible with other pistols.
How much to fuse?
It reaches rank 5. Higher ranks increase the per-kill gain and the reduction triggered by explosions hitting fewer than three enemies, while the cap remains 300%. The final step from rank 4 to 5 costs 480 Endo and 23,184 Credits. Weigh the stronger per-kill change against the matching larger penalty when the grenade hits too few targets.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The bonus depends on kill accumulation and is reduced by grenade explosions hitting fewer than three enemies.
- The per-kill increase and the reduction both grow with rank.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming grenade explosions against one or two enemies preserve the accumulated bonus.
- Treating the 300% cap as the amount gained per kill instead of the maximum.
