01

If comparing sword effects

Start with the named swords whose described effects fit the question, such as aerial attacks, finishing blows, or stamina conditions; their listed functions are specific rather than a general ranking.

02

If comparing greatsword effects

Read the enemy-count and solo-target entries alongside the general note that greatswords are slow, powerful weapons associated with flinching and breaking enemies.

If tracing progression

Use the Ascension overview for the documented AP and node-unlocking structure, then consult weapon entries for their stated effects; the sources do not provide named Ascension-node choices.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not treat all weapon damage as interchangeable

The weapons passage says enemies have different weaknesses by weapon type, and it describes orange damage numbers for weakness and purple numbers for resistance. Weapon type and affinity therefore matter to interpreting a listed weapon effect.

Check character restrictions and battle-control context

Swords and Royal Arms are exclusive to Noctis in the supplied passage. It also says that when character-swapping, allies cannot use their equipped secondary arm with the Attack command; character and control context affect how equipment is used.

Do not assume listed upgrades or names establish acquisition for this edition

The weapons reference mixes general weapon data with event and DLC entries and mentions patch-specific changes. Its table alone does not verify that every named weapon, trade, or acquisition detail applies to Windows Edition as released or currently.

References & guide scope

A reference to named one-handed swords, greatswords, and polearms with stated effects, plus the broad Ascension progression system. Entries describe reported function and restrictions; they do not compare effectiveness or establish optimal choices.

Edition and mechanic limits
  • The general weapons reference includes data labeled for Patch 1.29 and states that most weapons were modified for Patch 1.02; this article does not claim all figures are independently verified against the Windows Edition release or a current build.
  • The Ascension source supports only the overall AP and Astralsphere structure. It does not expose named skills, node effects, or exact AP costs, so no individual Ascension unlock is described.
  • The official Steam passage establishes the Windows Edition identity, release label, included content, and discontinued online-content notice; it does not establish weapon mechanics.
