Aether

Multi-form sword character with a shared five-hit Normal Attack string and distinct elemental abilities in each form.

Released Sep 28, 2020

Aether’s value depends on the chosen form: the abilities range from Anemo grouping and elemental absorption to Cryo crystal attacks, Dendro field support, Electro energy effects, Geo constructs, Hydro aimed attacks and Pyro coordinated damage. Choose a form for the effect you need, and invest in that form’s own combat talent tracks.

Aether GUIDE

Understand Aether

Useful when…

  • Use Anemo’s Gust Surge to pull objects and opponents along a forward-moving tornado, or absorb a listed element when the tornado contacts it.
  • Use Cryo’s Frostpierce Star for periodic Cryo crystals or coordinated crystals when Stellar-Conduct is active; Frostbound Javelin consumes Frostglow stacks to increase its damage.
  • Use Dendro’s Lea Lotus Lamp for continuous area damage and a conditional Elemental Mastery buff to active characters in its area.
  • Use Electro’s Abundance Amulets and Falling Thunder for conditional Energy restoration.
  • Use Geo constructs for climbing or blocking attacks where the meteorite or wall mechanics apply.
  • Use Hydro’s held skill for aimed attacks and potential HP recovery from collected droplets.
  • Use Pyro’s Scorching Threshold for coordinated attacks when the active character deals damage inside it.

Shared attacks and Anemo

The listed forms share a sword attack pattern of up to five rapid Normal Attacks and a two-hit Charged Attack that costs 20 Stamina. Plunging attacks damage opponents along the path and deal area damage on landing. Anemo’s Palm Vortex deals continuous damage to opponents in front of Aether, then explodes for a larger area hit; holding gradually increases its damage and area. Contact with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro adds damage of that type once per use. Gust Surge sends a six-second tornado forward, pulling objects and opponents toward it and dealing continuous damage. Contact with one of those same four elements adds damage of that type. The Burst has a 15-second cooldown and costs 60 Energy. Anemo’s final Normal Attack hit also releases a wind blade; Palm Vortex kills restore 2% HP for five seconds, at most once every five seconds.

Cryo: Frostpierce Star and Frostglow

Ice Fog Piercer deals Cryo damage and creates a Frostpierce Star that follows party members and periodically fires ice crystals at nearby opponents. With Radiance: Stellar-Conduct, it instead fires a coordinated crystal when Aether hits an opponent with a Normal, Charged, or Plunging Attack; this can trigger every 0.2 seconds. Each crystal hit grants one Frostglow stack, up to eight, and Frostglow expires after 30 seconds out of combat. Frostbound Javelin consumes existing Frostglow stacks to increase its damage. Consuming eight stacks also adds two strikes to its usual three; the Burst has a 15-second cooldown and costs 60 Energy. Ever-Keen Frost converts Aether’s Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attack damage to Cryo while a Frostpierce Star is on the field in Stellar-Conduct, and increases that damage by 80% of Aether’s ATK.

Dendro, Electro, and Geo utility

Dendro’s Razorgrass Blade sends leaves forward for Dendro damage. Surgent Manifestation creates a single Lea Lotus Lamp that deals continuous Dendro damage for 12 seconds. The Lamp can undergo only one transformation per duration: Hydro contact increases its area, Electro contact increases its attack speed, and Pyro contact makes it explode after a short delay and disappear. While it remains on the field, it gains one Overflowing Lotuslight stack per second, up to ten; each stack grants active characters in its area 6 Elemental Mastery. Electro’s Lightning Blade creates Abundance Amulets after hitting an opponent, initially up to two, and using the skill resets any amulets already generated. Each amulet lasts 15 seconds; collecting one restores Energy and grants 20% Energy Recharge for six seconds. Bellowing Thunder’s 12-second Lightning Shroud makes the active character’s Normal or Charged Attack hits call Falling Thunder, which deals Electro damage and restores that character’s Energy, once every 0.5 seconds at most. Geo’s Starfell Sword creates an adjustable, climbable Geo Construct that can also block attacks.

Hydro and Pyro: conditional effects

Hydro’s Aquacrest Saber can send a Torrent Surge forward with a press. Holding enters aiming mode and fires Dewdrops for up to six seconds, then sends a Torrent Surge. During the hold, if Aether is above 50% HP, Suffusion increases Dewdrop damage based on Max HP while consuming 4% Max HP per second. A Dewdrop hit can create a Sourcewater Droplet near Aether; collecting each droplet restores 7% HP. At most one is created per second and four per skill use. The Hydro Burst, Rising Waters, creates a slow-moving bubble that deals continuous damage to nearby opponents. Pyro’s Flowfire Blade has distinct tap and hold modes. Tap summons a Blazing Threshold that follows the active character and periodically damages nearby opponents. Hold deals area damage and summons a Scorching Threshold, which launches a coordinated Pyro attack when the active character inside deals damage, at most once every three seconds. Both modes grant 42 Nightsoul points; the state lasts up to 12 seconds and ends when points run out. Reusing the skill while it is active resets its points to 42. Plains Scorcher restores 7 Nightsoul points per second for four seconds after hitting.

Talent progression

Ascension and combat talents use separate progression tracks. Each elemental form has its own Normal Attack, Skill, and Burst tracks, so consult the track for the form and talent you intend to improve. The listed costs are selected examples; specific materials depend on the track. Choose tracks according to the abilities you use rather than treating the full set of form tracks as one shared investment.

Limitations and tradeoffs

  • Each form has distinct abilities and form-specific combat talent tracks; invest according to the form and talent used.
  • Several effects depend on elemental contact, collecting an item, reaching an HP threshold, or dealing damage within an area.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting Anemo absorption without contact with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro, or expecting more than one absorbed element per use.
  • Expecting the Dendro Lamp to transform more than once during its duration.
  • Treating Electro’s skill amulets and Burst’s Falling Thunder as one effect; their triggers and Energy mechanics differ.
  • Assuming Geo’s stone wall can be climbed; only the meteorite is stated to be climbable.
  • Using Hydro’s held-mode damage bonus at or below 50% HP, or overlooking its per-second HP cost and the need to collect droplets for healing.
  • Expecting Pyro’s Scorching Threshold coordinated attack without the active character dealing damage inside it.
