Lan Yan is an Anemo catalyst user whose skill provides a shield and a dash, followed by an aerial ring attack. Consider her when you want a shield that scales with ATK, can absorb one of four specified elements, and can add corresponding elemental damage to her rings after the right skill interaction.

Lan Yan GUIDE
Understand Lan Yan
Useful when…
Providing a shield while repositioning with a skill dash
Absorbing Anemo, Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro damage with enhanced efficiency
Pulling nearby opponents and objects with her burst
Skill, shield, and elemental absorption
Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance dashes forward, forms a shield, and sends Lan Yan into the air when she contacts a target. The shield scales from her ATK, lasts 12.5 seconds, has a 16-second cooldown, and absorbs Anemo damage at 250% efficiency at the listed talent level. If the dash interacts with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro, the shield absorbs that corresponding element with 250% efficiency. When this absorption occurs, her thrown Feathermoon Rings also gain extra damage of that element equal to 50% of their original damage; that added damage counts as Elemental Skill damage.
Follow-up, burst, and other uses
While airborne from the skill, pressing skill again or using a normal attack throws Feathermoon Rings; after hitting, they spin between nearby opponents twice. Holding the skill instead enters aiming mode to adjust dash direction. Her burst deals multiple instances of AoE Anemo damage and pulls in nearby opponents and objects; it has a 15-second cooldown and 60 Energy cost at the listed level. Her passive prevents Crystalflies and certain other listed wildlife from being startled when the party approaches, which can help during exploration.
Improvement priorities
If you use Lan Yan primarily for shielding, the skill is the natural talent to consider raising: its shield absorption scales with ATK, and the same skill enables elemental absorption and the follow-up rings. Consider the burst if you value its pull and damage; normal-attack levels matter more when you rely on her ordinary catalyst attacks. This is role-based advice, not a fixed priority. Each combat talent can be raised to level 10; the supplied level 9-to-10 example costs 700,000 Mora, talent materials, Eroded Sunfire, and a Crown of Insight. Her passive also helps avoid startling certain wildlife while exploring.
Limits and alternatives
The shield's listed duration is shorter than its cooldown, and elemental absorption only applies when the dash interacts with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro.
Limitations and tradeoffs
Shield durability scales with ATK, so the skill's defensive function depends on that stat.
Elemental absorption and added ring damage require the dash to interact with one of four specified elements.
Skill shield duration is 12.5 seconds against a 16-second cooldown at the listed level.
Common mistakes to avoid
Expecting elemental absorption without the skill dash interacting with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro.
Using normal attack during the skill's airborne state without realizing it triggers the ring throw.
Assuming the shield remains active for the full cooldown; the listed duration is 12.5 seconds and cooldown 16 seconds.

Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance · Elemental skill
Summoning forth the Swallow-Wisp Shield, a secret art passed down across generations, Lan Yan dashes forward and, upon making contact with her target, will leap back into the air. The Swallow-Wisp Shield's DMG absorption scales based on her ATK, and has a 250% absorption efficiency against Anemo DMG. While in mid-air due to the effects of her Elemental Skill: Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance, pressing her Elemental Skill again or pressing Normal Attack will cause Lan Yan to hurl her Feathermoon Rings at an opponent, and they will spin between nearby opponents twice upon hit, dealing Anemo DMG. Holding the Skill will cause it to behave differently.

Four Sealing Divination Charms
When the dash from the Elemental Skill Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance hits a target, if it interacts with Hydro/Pyro/Cryo/Electro, the Swallow-Wisp Shield will undergo Elemental Absorption, with the converted shield absorbing DMG from the corresponding element with 250% efficiency. Additionally, if this use of Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance causes the Swallow-Wisp Shield to undergo Elemental Absorption, the Feathermoon Rings that Lan Yan throws at her foes additionally deal Elemental DMG equal to 50% of the original in the corresponding Elemental Type. This DMG is considered Elemental Skill DMG.
Skyfeather Evil-Subduing Charm
The Elemental Skill Swallow-Wisp Pinion Dance and the Elemental Burst Lustrous Moonrise deal increased DMG equal to 309% and 774% of Lan Yan's Elemental Mastery respectively.
