Understand Mualani
Useful when…
- Use her skill to surf, move on water or liquid Phlogiston, and deal Nightsoul-aligned Hydro damage with converted normal attacks.
- Build three Wave Momentum stacks before a Sharky’s Bite to trigger the stronger Sharky’s Surging Bite.
- Use marked targets to launch Shark Missiles at multiple nearby marked opponents, keeping in mind the damage reduction against multiple targets.
- Use her burst for a tracking AoE Hydro hit that scales with Max HP.
- Use her exploration passive to reveal nearby Natlan-specific resources on the mini-map in areas with Phlogiston Mechanics.
Surf state and attack conditions
Surfshark Wavebreaker grants 60 Nightsoul points and puts Mualani into Nightsoul’s Blessing. While surfing, she moves faster, has increased interruption resistance, can move on water and liquid Phlogiston, and takes no damage from liquid Phlogiston. Her normal attacks become Sharky’s Bites, which deal Nightsoul-aligned Hydro damage based on Max HP and count as normal-attack damage; she can use them in mid-air. Contact with an opponent marks it as Prey and gives one Wave Momentum stack, up to three. The same opponent can grant a stack once every 0.7 seconds. Each stack raises Sharky’s Bite damage; at three stacks the bite becomes a Sharky’s Surging Bite, gains additional damage, and clears the stacks when it hits. Hitting a marked opponent with a bite removes that mark and fires Shark Missiles at up to five nearby marked opponents, then clears their marks. When multiple opponents are targeted by the bite and missiles, damage decreases, down to 72% of the original when three opponents are targeted. Her burst, Boomsharka-laka, fires a tracking Super Shark Missile that deals AoE Hydro damage based on Max HP. These attacks make the skill state and its contact-based buildup central to her damage pattern.
Keeping the state going and using its bonuses
The surf state ends when Nightsoul points run out or when the skill is used again. A Surging Bite hit can generate a nearby Puffer; picking it up restores 20 Nightsoul points, up to two Puffers during one Nightsoul’s Blessing. In Natlan, after Nightsoul points are depleted, Mualani can consume Phlogiston to maintain the state. Her Nightsoul Transmission can start the state with 40 points when switching to her from certain movement situations, but only in areas with Phlogiston Mechanics and once every 10 seconds for the team. Moving on water or liquid Phlogiston consumes Nightsoul points or Phlogiston more slowly: 75% less in Natlan and 35% less outside it. Nightsoul Bursts from nearby party members build Wavechaser’s Exploits, up to three stacks, lasting 20 seconds. Her burst clears those stacks and gains a Max-HP-based damage increase for each stack. This can be useful when the party can trigger those bursts before she uses her burst; it is separate from the Wave Momentum stacks used for Sharky’s Bites.
Improvement priorities
Her skill is the defining track because it supplies Nightsoul’s Blessing and the Sharky’s Bite attacks that scale with Max HP. Consider raising the burst track when you use Boomsharka-laka, which also scales with Max HP. Normal-attack investment is relevant to her transformed bites because they are explicitly considered normal-attack damage; the basic three-hit catalyst sequence is a separate attack description. The three combat tracks reach level 10, and the listed final upgrade examples require substantial Mora and materials plus a Crown of Insight. Ascension is a separate track with its own material costs. Prioritize according to how often you use her surf attacks and burst rather than assuming all tracks have equal value.
Limitations and common mistakes
Mualani’s main skill damage depends on Max HP, and the strongest bite requires building three Wave Momentum stacks through contact. A mark is consumed by the bite and its missiles, so one attack does not preserve marked targets for repeated missiles. Multi-target damage is reduced, reaching 72% of the original per-hit damage when three opponents are targeted. The skill state ends when its points are depleted unless a Puffer restores points or Natlan Phlogiston can sustain it. Do not confuse Wave Momentum, which strengthens Sharky’s Bites, with Wavechaser’s Exploits, which strengthen her burst after nearby party members trigger Nightsoul Bursts. Her charged attack is a separate stamina-costing Pufferball attack, not the surf-state bite.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Her skill’s strongest attack requires building stacks by contacting opponents, so it depends on staying in the surf state and engaging targets.
- Her marked-target missiles can hit several enemies, but damage decreases when multiple opponents are targeted.
- Her Nightsoul and Phlogiston movement benefits are stronger in Natlan, while outside Natlan the water-movement consumption reduction is smaller.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using Sharky’s Bite before building three Wave Momentum stacks when aiming for the Surging Bite.
- Confusing Wave Momentum stacks for bites with Wavechaser’s Exploits stacks for her burst.
- Expecting a marked target to stay marked after a Sharky’s Bite; the hit clears its mark.
- Overlooking the multi-target damage reduction when bites and missiles hit several opponents.
