Understand Ningguang
Useful when…
- Build Star Jades with normal attacks and release them alongside a charged attack.
- Place Jade Screen to block certain enemy projectiles or support a nearby burst.
- Use her mini-map ore-vein display while exploring.
How does her attack pattern work?
Each normal gem shot that hits an opponent grants one Star Jade. Her charged attack costs stamina and fires a giant gem; if she has Star Jades, they are fired at the enemy as additional damage. Backup Plan makes that charged attack cost no stamina while she possesses Star Jades. This creates a practical pattern of landing normal attacks before a charged attack when you want to use the extra projectiles. Her plunging attack is a separate Geo area attack on landing.
What does Jade Screen provide?
Jade Screen deals area Geo damage when created, blocks opponents’ projectiles, and has endurance based on Ningguang’s Max HP. It is a Geo Construct that can block certain attacks but cannot be climbed; only one screen can exist at a time. A character who passes through it gains 12% Geo damage bonus for 10 seconds. When Ningguang uses Starshatter while a Jade Screen is nearby, the screen fires additional gem projectiles. This gives the screen defensive utility and a direct interaction with her burst, rather than making it only a damage wall.
What should you invest in?
Normal attack investment supports the Star Jade generation and basic gem damage; charged attack follow-up value also relies on making use of the Jades. Skill investment improves Jade Screen damage and supports its defensive and Geo-bonus role. Burst investment improves Starshatter and benefits from having the screen nearby. Prioritize according to whether you use her as an active attacker or lean more on screen and burst utility. Ascension uses Glaze Lily and Basalt Pillar at the listed stages. Talent examples use Prosperity books and Insignia materials; the level 9-to-10 example also requires Spirit Locket of Boreas and a Crown of Insight.
What should you avoid?
A Jade Screen is not climbable, and placing another replaces the existing one; it blocks projectiles but only certain attacks. Passing through the screen is required for its Geo damage bonus. Ningguang’s passive utility marks nearby ore veins used in forging on the mini-map, which is useful in exploration but does not alter combat. The comparison entries identify Geo characters but do not provide enough ability information to establish direct alternatives to her Star Jade attacks or screen.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The charged attack’s stamina-free passive requires at least one Star Jade, which comes from normal attacks hitting.
- Jade Screen’s projectile blocking applies only to certain attacks, and only one screen may exist.
- Her Geo damage bonus requires a character to pass through the screen.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using charged attacks before gaining Star Jades and expecting the stamina-free effect.
- Expecting the Jade Screen to block every attack or to be climbable.
- Forgetting to pass through the screen to gain its Geo damage bonus.
