Understand Dragonspine Spear
Useful when…
- Use it when the wielder's damage relies on Normal or Charged Attacks and benefits from Physical DMG Bonus.
- Consider the icicle's higher listed damage against Cryo-affected opponents when that condition can be maintained.
Proc mechanics
At R1, hitting an opponent with a Normal or Charged Attack has a 60% chance to form an Everfrost Icicle above the target and drop it for AoE damage equal to 80% of ATK. If the opponent is affected by Cryo, the listed icicle damage is instead 200% of ATK. The effect can occur only once every 10 seconds. At R5, the chance is 100%, with 140% of ATK normally or 360% against a Cryo-affected opponent. These are the weapon's stated hit and damage conditions; the 10-second limit remains.
Who should consider it
The Physical DMG Bonus secondary stat and Normal/Charged Attack trigger favor a polearm user who deals physical damage through direct attacks. Cryo application can strengthen the icicle's listed hit, but the weapon text does not make the passive itself a sustained Cryo damage effect. Its periodic AoE proc is an extra component rather than a replacement for the wielder's attack pattern.
Investment tradeoffs
Ascension raises the weapon through six stages; the provided examples show costs at selected stages. Refinement improves the proc chance and both listed icicle multipliers, reaching a guaranteed trigger on a qualifying hit at R5. However, refinement still does not change the once-per-10-seconds cap, and it uses another copy of the weapon at each listed step. Weigh that limited proc frequency against the additional materials and copies required.
Alternatives and limitations
The Catch is built around Energy Recharge and Burst damage/CRIT, while Ballad of the Fjords supplies CRIT Rate and conditional Elemental Mastery; these are different offensive profiles, not direct copies of Dragonspine Spear's Physical DMG Bonus and icicle proc. Its low-rarity comparison, Beginner's Protector, has no secondary stat or listed passive. Do not expect the icicle to trigger on Skill or Burst hits: the stated trigger is Normal or Charged Attack hits.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The icicle can trigger only once every 10 seconds.
- The stronger icicle damage requires the opponent to be affected by Cryo.
- Refinement consumes copies to improve a proc with a fixed interval limit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Skill or Burst hits to trigger the icicle.
- Assuming the enhanced icicle multiplier applies without Cryo affecting the opponent.
- Treating R5's guaranteed chance as removing the 10-second trigger limit.
