Understand Engulfing Lightning
Useful when…
- Equip a polearm user who needs Energy Recharge for frequent Burst use and benefits from ATK.
- Consider when the wielder can make use of the temporary Energy Recharge bonus after using a Burst.
How does the Energy Recharge conversion work?
At R1, only Energy Recharge above the 100% baseline contributes to the passive ATK bonus: each percentage point above that baseline gives 0.28 percentage points of ATK, up to an 80% ATK bonus. After the wielder uses an Elemental Burst, the weapon adds 30% Energy Recharge for 12 seconds. Refinements increase the conversion rate, ATK cap, and temporary Energy Recharge; at R5 these are 56%, 120%, and 50%, respectively. The weapon’s Energy Recharge secondary stat is relevant to both the conversion and Burst support.
When should you consider it?
The effect is most aligned with a character that needs Energy Recharge but also scales damage with ATK. The temporary Energy Recharge begins after using the Burst, so it should not be mistaken for a pre-Burst boost. The ATK conversion uses Energy Recharge above 100%, with its own maximum; additional Energy Recharge beyond the point where the cap is reached does not add more of that ATK effect.
What investment does it ask for?
Ascension uses the listed materials and raises weapon stats. Refinement consumes a duplicate copy and Mora, increasing the conversion, cap, and post-Burst Energy Recharge. Those improvements can be valuable for a wielder that uses all three parts, but duplicates are a significant investment. At R1 the effect already has its core conversion and post-Burst Energy Recharge; refinement is a choice to strengthen them rather than a requirement to activate them.
How do other polearms compare?
The Catch directly increases Elemental Burst damage and Burst CRIT Rate, while also having Energy Recharge as its secondary stat. Ballad of the Fjords has CRIT Rate and grants Elemental Mastery when the party has at least three different elemental types. Beginner’s Protector has no secondary stat or refinement passive listed. These comparison options emphasize different stats and conditions; they do not reproduce Engulfing Lightning’s Energy Recharge-to-ATK conversion.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The ATK conversion excludes the first 100% Energy Recharge and stops at its refinement-specific cap.
- The temporary Energy Recharge bonus starts after a Burst and lasts 12 seconds.
- Refinement needs duplicate copies, so its gains should be weighed against the weapon’s already-active R1 conversion.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting Energy Recharge below or including the 100% baseline as conversion bonus.
- Forgetting the ATK bonus has a cap, then continuing to add Energy Recharge solely for more conversion.
- Expecting the weapon’s temporary Energy Recharge to help pay for the Burst that activates it.
