Understand King's Squire
Useful when…
- An on-field bow user who can use a Skill or Burst and remain active
- A character who benefits from temporary Elemental Mastery
- A build that can make use of the ATK secondary stat and end-of-effect hit
What activates Teachings of the Forest?
Unleashing an Elemental Skill or Burst grants Teachings of the Forest, increasing EM by 60 for 12 seconds at Refinement 1. Switching characters removes the effect. When the effect ends or is removed, it deals damage to one nearby opponent equal to 100% of ATK. It can trigger once every 20 seconds. Refinement 5 raises the EM increase to 140 and the ending hit to 180% of ATK; the 12-second duration and 20-second trigger interval remain.
When is it a practical choice?
The short EM window favors a wielder who can use the Skill or Burst and then make use of the buff before switching. Switching early both removes the EM effect and causes its end hit, so a quick swap does not preserve the temporary EM. Alley Hunter is instead oriented toward off-field damage: its bonus builds while the wielder is off-field and falls after more than 4 seconds on-field. Amos’ Bow rewards Normal and Charged Attacks, with additional damage based on arrow flight time. Those passives have distinct conditions from King’s Squire’s temporary EM.
Investment priorities
Ascension improves the weapon’s base stats. Refinement raises the temporary EM and ending hit, but requires another copy. Prioritize refinement only if the wielder can use the buff and you value the higher effect enough to spend copies. The supplied upgrade examples list ascension costs at stages 0–1, 3–4, and 5–6, and refinement examples require a King’s Squire copy.
What should you avoid?
Do not plan to carry Teachings of the Forest through a character switch: the effect is explicitly removed. Its end hit targets one nearby opponent, not an area, and the passive has a 20-second trigger interval. A Skill or Burst activates the buff, but does not remove the stated single-target limitation on the ending damage.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Switching characters removes the temporary EM effect.
- The ending hit targets one nearby opponent.
- Refinement consumes another copy.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Switching out and expecting the EM buff to persist.
- Treating the ending hit as area damage.
- Ignoring the 20-second trigger interval when timing Skills and Bursts.
