Understand Bow
Useful when…
- Attack at range with arrows; longer draws deal more damage.
- Use Flame to ignite arrows, hit targets, TNT, and campfires.
- Trigger wooden pressure plates, wooden buttons, target blocks, and tripwire with arrows.
Charge, damage, and movement
In Java Edition, use the bow to draw it and release to fire; you need an arrow in your inventory unless in Creative mode. An uncharged shot deals 1 HP, a full charge takes about 0.9 seconds, and a critical charge begins after drawing for about one second. Critical damage varies, and an arrow can lose damage as it travels. Bow enchantments do not affect arrow speed or the distance an arrow travels. While drawing or holding a charge, movement is reduced to sneaking speed except while riding a mob, minecart, or boat, or flying with elytra. Arrows are blocked by shields. Supported examples of targets arrows cannot damage include Endermen and the Breeze.
Enchantment choices
Power increases damage dealt by bow-shot arrows; Punch increases knockback; Flame ignites arrows and can ignite TNT and campfires. Infinity prevents consumption of regular arrows when shooting, while Mending repairs the bow when you obtain experience; the two enchantments are mutually exclusive. Unbreaking grants a chance to avoid durability consumption. The bow has 384 maximum durability in Java Edition 26.3. Combining bows in an anvil preserves their enchantments.
Limits and utility
Charging takes time and slows movement, and arrows shot through water in Java Edition lose damage unless they return to the air or otherwise regain momentum. Arrows can trigger wooden pressure plates, target blocks, wooden buttons, and tripwire, but not stone pressure plates or stone buttons. The bow requires an arrow outside Creative mode, and shields block arrows.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Longer draws take time and restrict movement while charging.
- Infinity and Mending cannot be used together.
- Arrows can lose damage over distance or when shot through water.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Releasing early when aiming for a full or critical charge.
- Assuming Infinity prevents consumption of every arrow type; it applies to regular arrows.
- Expecting arrows to pass shields or damage targets such as Endermen and the Breeze.
