Understand Carved Pumpkin
Useful when…
- Wear it when looking at Endermen without aggravating them or Creakings without freezing them.
- Hide your player marker from other players’ locator maps and locator bars while wearing it.
- Place it last when building a snow, iron, or copper golem.
- Craft it with a torch to make a Jack o’Lantern.
Wearing the pumpkin
A carved pumpkin equips in the head slot and provides no armor value. It limits the view with a mask-shaped overlay. The overlay is not displayed in third-person view; in Java Edition it is also not displayed when the HUD is hidden. Wearing it does not aggravate Endermen or freeze Creakings when you look at them. It makes the wearer invisible to other players on locator maps and locator bars.
Golems and crafting
A carved pumpkin is the final placed block when constructing a snow, iron, or copper golem. The required body blocks differ by golem, and the pumpkin must be placed last for the golem to spawn. A carved pumpkin and a torch craft into a Jack o’Lantern. Using shears on an uncarved pumpkin produces a carved pumpkin and, in Java Edition, four pumpkin seeds; carving cannot be reversed.
Limits and other uses
The head-slot item provides no armor, and its view overlay is restricted in first person. Its Enderman and Creaking effects concern looking at those entities; these are specific interactions rather than general armor protection. Carved pumpkins can also be composted, with a 65% chance to raise the composter level by one.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Wearing it uses the head slot without providing armor.
- The mask overlay restricts the first-person view; third-person and Java HUD-hidden views do not display the overlay.
- Carving an uncarved pumpkin cannot be reversed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the pumpkin as armor when it grants no armor value.
- Placing the pumpkin before arranging the required golem body blocks; it must be placed last.
- Expecting to turn a carved pumpkin back into an uncarved pumpkin.
