Understand Copper Chestplate
Useful when…
- Wear it for 4 armor points as basic chest armor.
- Choose a protection enchantment suited to expected damage.
- Use Unbreaking or Mending to help maintain it over time.
What does it provide?
The chestplate equips in the chest slot and provides 4 armor points, with no listed armor toughness. It has 176 maximum durability and can be crafted from copper ingots. Java 26.3 also lists abandoned camp chest loot and possible drops from mobs wearing it.
Which enchantments fit the role?
Protection reduces damage overall; Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection target their respective damage sources. These four protection enchantments are mutually exclusive, so select one rather than planning to combine them. Unbreaking can reduce durability use, and Mending repairs the chestplate when experience is obtained. Thorns deals returning damage to attackers, but its listed enchantment weight is low.
How do repairs and trims work?
An anvil repair with a copper ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Anvil combination of two copper chestplates also preserves enchantments. Crafting or grindstone combination adds durability plus 5%, but loses enchantments. A smithing trim changes appearance without improving armor strength.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Provides 4 armor points, so its usefulness depends on whether that level of chest protection meets the situation.
- Anvil repairs preserve enchantments; crafting or grindstone combination trades that preservation for a durability combination.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a trim to increase armor strength.
- Using crafting or grindstone combination on an enchanted chestplate and expecting its enchantments to remain.
- Attempting to combine multiple mutually exclusive protection enchantments.
