Understand Diamond Chestplate
Useful when…
- Add a large armor contribution in the chest slot.
- Select a defensive enchantment for general or specific damage protection.
- Use Unbreaking or Mending to extend its service life.
- Apply a trim for appearance without changing armor strength.
What does it provide?
When worn, the Diamond Chestplate provides 8 armor points and 2 armor toughness. It occupies the chest slot and has 528 maximum durability. These are the chestplate's own values; they do not by themselves describe total protection from a full armor loadout.
Which enchantment should I consider?
Protection improves overall damage reduction; Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection target their named damage categories. These four protection enchantments are mutually exclusive. Thorns returns damage to attackers, while Unbreaking can negate some durability use and Mending repairs the chestplate when experience is obtained.
How should I repair or customize it?
An anvil repair with a diamond restores one quarter of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Anvil combination also preserves enchantments. Crafting-table or grindstone combination adds remaining durability plus 5% of maximum but does not keep enchantments. Armor trims require a smithing template and an ingot or crystal, and change appearance without changing gameplay strength.
What should I avoid?
Do not try to stack the four listed protection enchantments on one chestplate. If combining damaged chestplates, use an anvil when preserving enchantments matters; crafting or grindstone combination loses them. Curse of Binding prevents removing the chestplate, so consider equipment swapping before applying it.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Its 8 armor points and 2 toughness make it a substantial chest-slot piece, with 528 durability to maintain.
- Specialized protection choices cannot be combined with one another.
- Non-anvil combination restores durability but sacrifices the chestplates' enchantments.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting multiple protection enchantment types to stack.
- Using crafting or grindstone combination when enchantments must be retained.
- Applying Curse of Binding without considering that the chestplate cannot be removed.
