Understand Diamond Shovel
Useful when…
- Dig dirt and soil-type blocks quickly.
- Create dirt paths by using the shovel on eligible blocks.
- Choose Fortune or Silk Touch to affect mining drops.
What does the shovel do?
The Diamond Shovel breaks dirt and soil-type materials quickly; breaking a block costs one durability, while instantly broken blocks cost none. Using it on an eligible block creates a dirt path and costs one durability. It can also extinguish campfires. Its maximum durability is 1,561, and it mines shovel-effective blocks at speed 8.
How does it handle in Java combat?
The reference gives the Diamond Shovel 5.5 HP damage and a one-second recovery between attacks. Using it as a weapon consumes two durability per attack, so combat wears it down faster than digging. Efficiency increases mining speed; Fortune and Silk Touch affect drops differently and cannot be used together.
What repair choices preserve enchantments?
Anvil repair with a diamond restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down. Anvil repair or combining two shovels preserves enchantments. Crafting-table or grindstone combination adds durability plus 5%, but does not preserve enchantments. Unbreaking can negate some durability consumption, and Mending repairs the shovel when experience is collected.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Weapon use consumes two durability per attack.
- Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be used together.
- Its digging speed applies to shovel-effective blocks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using it for repeated attacks without accounting for two durability lost per attack.
- Combining Fortune and Silk Touch.
- Combining an enchanted shovel in a crafting grid or grindstone when its enchantments need to be preserved.
