Understand Iron Chestplate
Useful when…
- Wear it in the chest slot for 6 armor points.
- Apply a damage-protection enchantment suited to the threats you face.
- Maintain it with iron ingots or anvil combination when preserving enchantments matters.
What does it provide?
The chestplate fits the chest slot and contributes 6 armor points. Its maximum durability is 240. It can be repaired with iron ingots in an anvil; each ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, while preserving enchantments.
Which defensive enchantment should you consider?
Protection reduces damage overall. Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection specialize against their named damage sources. These four protection enchantments are mutually exclusive, so select one rather than planning to combine them. Unbreaking can reduce durability consumption and Mending repairs the chestplate as you gain experience.
How do repairs affect enchantments?
Anvil repair with iron ingots and anvil combination of two chestplates preserve enchantments. Crafting or grindstone combination adds the remaining durability plus 5%, but removes ordinary enchantments. Armor trims change appearance and have no gameplay or armor-strength effect.
What should you avoid?
Do not spend resources trying to combine multiple protection types; the four listed protection enchantments exclude one another. Check for Curse of Binding before equipping a found chestplate, since it prevents removal. Curse of Vanishing makes it disappear on death.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Six armor points and 240 durability make it a substantial chest-slot defense piece.
- Only one of the four listed protection types can be applied, so specialization is a deliberate choice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Planning to combine Protection with Projectile, Blast, or Fire Protection.
- Using crafting or a grindstone on an enchanted chestplate and expecting ordinary enchantments to remain.
- Assuming a trim improves the chestplate's armor strength.
