Understand Iron Helmet
Useful when…
- Add head-slot armor during survival exploration or combat.
- Use Respiration or Aqua Affinity when the helmet supports underwater work.
- Use leather boots instead when the specific need is safe movement through powder snow.
What protection does it provide?
Wearing the helmet adds 2 armor points. It has 165 durability and occupies the head slot. The iron helmet is a single armor piece, so its contribution is only part of the protection provided by a full armor loadout.
Which enchantments suit it?
Protection is a general damage-reduction option. Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, and Fire Protection focus on their respective damage sources, and these four protection enchantments cannot be combined with one another. For underwater activity, Respiration extends breathing time and Aqua Affinity improves underwater mining speed. Unbreaking reduces durability consumption chances, while Mending repairs the helmet when you obtain experience. Curse of Binding prevents removing it; Curse of Vanishing makes it disappear on death.
How do you repair or acquire one?
Crafting uses iron ingots. An anvil repair with an iron ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Two helmets can also be combined, including through crafting or a grindstone; the durability is added with a 5% bonus, though the grindstone does not preserve enchantments. Iron helmets can also appear in supported Java loot and as an armorer trade, but crafting gives a direct route when you have the materials.
What should you keep in mind?
Armor trims change appearance but do not improve protection. Do not apply Curse of Binding to a helmet you may need to remove, and choose only one of the four mutually exclusive protection enchantments.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Provides a modest 2 armor points and has 165 durability.
- Enchantments can tailor protection or underwater utility, but the four protection types are mutually exclusive.
- Repairing with iron preserves enchantments; grindstone combination does not.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a trim increases armor protection.
- Combining incompatible Protection, Projectile Protection, Blast Protection, or Fire Protection enchantments.
- Using a grindstone to combine enchanted helmets and expecting the enchantments to remain.
