Understand Iron Hoe
Useful when…
- Turn eligible grass and dirt blocks into farmland for crops.
- Convert coarse dirt or rooted dirt, or break plant and sculk blocks more quickly.
- Use on a block with Fortune or Silk Touch according to the desired drops, if the enchantment fits the task.
What can you do with it?
Use the hoe on grass or dirt to make farmland, provided the target has no block above it. Mycelium and podzol cannot be tilled directly; a shovel can first turn them into dirt paths, which can then be tilled. Using the hoe on coarse dirt converts it to regular dirt, and using it on rooted dirt yields hanging roots while leaving normal dirt. It also breaks various plant blocks, Nether fungi, and sculk blocks faster. Tilling consumes one durability; breaking blocks consumes zero when they break instantly by hand and one otherwise.
How should you enchant or repair it?
Efficiency increases mining speed, while Unbreaking can reduce durability use and Mending repairs the hoe when you obtain experience. Fortune and Silk Touch serve different drop goals and are mutually exclusive. The hoe has 250 durability; an iron ingot in an anvil restores 62 points and preserves enchantments. Combining two hoes adds their remaining durability plus 5%; an anvil preserves enchantments, while crafting or a grindstone does not.
Is it useful in combat?
In Java Edition, the iron hoe deals 1 HP of damage, has an attack-speed modifier of -1, and takes about 0.33 seconds to recover. Weapon use costs one durability. Treat it as a farming tool first: the listed combat damage is low, and using it as a weapon spends the same durability needed for tilling and harvesting.
When should you consider another tool?
The hoe is made with an iron ingot and a stick. The pickaxe, shovel, and hoe have distinct block roles: the provided comparison identifies the pickaxe and shovel as other tools, but supplies no comparative mining speeds or durability details for them. Use the hoe for its supported soil and plant-block interactions rather than assuming it replaces those tools for general mining or digging.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Combines tilling and specialized plant-block harvesting, but is not a general-purpose mining tool.
- At 250 durability, routine tilling and tool use consume the same limited resource.
- Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be used together.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to till mycelium or podzol directly instead of converting it to a dirt path first.
- Tilling when snow, a torch, or another block covers the target.
- Expecting Java Edition combat damage comparable to a dedicated weapon.
