Understand Iron Pickaxe
Useful when…
- Mine stone and metal-based materials at the iron tool's listed speed.
- Use for blocks requiring mining level 2 or below, subject to the block's tool requirement.
- Apply Efficiency for speed, or choose Fortune or Silk Touch for different drop goals.
What is it suited to mine?
The pickaxe is correct for drops from blocks tagged as mineable by pickaxe and has a listed speed of 6 for those blocks. Its mining level is 2. A block that requires a higher tier may not yield its drops even if the pickaxe can break it, so verify the required mining level before mining valuable resources. Breaking a block usually consumes one durability; blocks with zero hardness, such as flowers and torches, do not consume durability.
How should you improve it?
Efficiency increases mining speed. Fortune increases drops, while Silk Touch makes blocks drop themselves; those two enchantments are mutually exclusive, so choose according to the materials you want to collect. Unbreaking reduces durability consumption chances and Mending repairs the tool when you obtain experience. The pickaxe has 250 durability. An iron ingot in an anvil restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments; combining two pickaxes adds durability plus 5% and also preserves enchantments on an anvil.
Can it serve as a weapon?
In Java Edition, the iron pickaxe has 4 HP base attack damage and an attack-speed modifier of -2.8, with about 0.85 seconds to recover. Attacking consumes durability. This is a secondary use: the pickaxe's mining durability and slower recovery make it costly to rely on when its main job is gathering blocks.
How do you get one?
Crafting uses an iron ingot and sticks. Java loot references also include village toolsmith and weaponsmith chests, among others. An enchanted pickaxe can be offered by a journeyman toolsmith. These sources can save crafting materials when encountered, but the recipe gives a direct way to replace a worn or missing tool.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Mining level 2 covers many useful blocks but is insufficient for blocks requiring a higher tier.
- Fortune and Silk Touch support incompatible drop goals.
- Using the pickaxe to attack spends durability needed for mining.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming that breaking a block guarantees it will drop when a higher mining tier is required.
- Pairing Fortune and Silk Touch, which are mutually exclusive.
- Using a mining tool for routine combat and wearing it down.
