Understand Iron Shovel
Useful when…
- Dig dirt and soil-type materials efficiently.
- Collect snowballs from snow or snow blocks without Silk Touch.
- Create dirt paths or extinguish campfires.
What utility does it offer?
The shovel is correct for drops from blocks tagged as shovel-mineable and has a listed speed of 6 for those blocks. Breaking a block generally uses one durability, while an instantly breaking block costs none. Use it on eligible blocks to create dirt paths, and on campfires to extinguish them. It can also break snow or snow blocks to obtain snowballs without Silk Touch.
How should you maintain or enchant it?
The iron shovel has 250 durability. Each iron ingot used in an anvil restores 62 durability and preserves enchantments; combining two shovels adds their durability plus 5% and preserves enchantments on an anvil. Efficiency increases mining speed, Unbreaking reduces durability consumption chances, and Mending repairs it when you gain experience. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive and affect drops, so choose based on the blocks and results you want.
Is it a combat tool?
In Java Edition, the iron shovel deals 4.5 HP base attack damage and has an attack-speed modifier of -3, taking about one second to recover. A weapon hit consumes two durability, twice the shovel's stated cost for an ordinary block break. It can deal damage in an emergency, but using it repeatedly for combat quickly spends durability intended for digging.
What are the practical limits?
Craft one with an iron ingot and a stick. The listed tool speed applies to shovel-mineable blocks; it does not make the shovel a general substitute for a pickaxe or hoe. The supplied bow, brush, and carrot-on-a-stick comparisons do not establish shovel alternatives or comparative performance.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Useful for digging and several terrain interactions, but its tool speed applies to the supported block category.
- Weapon attacks cost two durability and have a one-second recovery interval.
- Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be combined.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the shovel on unrelated blocks and expecting its shovel-mineable speed or correct drops.
- Ignoring the two durability points spent per weapon attack.
- Assuming Fortune and Silk Touch can coexist.
