Understand Iron Sword
Useful when…
- Fight mobs with a weapon that recovers faster than the listed iron shovel or pickaxe.
- Choose Sharpness for broad damage, or Smite or Bane of Arthropods for their named target groups.
- Use Looting when additional entity drops are the goal.
How does it handle in Java Edition?
The iron sword's base attack-damage modifier is 5; with the unarmed base included, its normal base damage is 6 HP. It has an attack-speed modifier of -2.4, so allow the attack-strength cooldown to recover for a full-strength hit. A fully charged critical hit can deal more damage, but the standard base figure describes the normal attack. The sword has 250 durability.
Which enchantments change its role?
Sharpness increases damage broadly. Smite focuses on undead, while Bane of Arthropods focuses on arthropods; these three damage enchantments are mutually exclusive. Looting increases drops from entities killed with the sword, Knockback increases knockback, Fire Aspect ignites targets, and Sweeping Edge increases sweeping damage in Java Edition. Unbreaking and Mending help preserve or restore durability. Curse of Vanishing causes the sword to disappear on death.
When should you choose another approach?
The sword can break some blocks faster than by hand, but breaking a block that does not instantly break by hand consumes two durability. Its block breaking is therefore a situational use rather than a replacement for a tool suited to the block. A bow is a separate ranged weapon, while the supplied brush and carrot on a stick are distinct equipment candidates; their comparison entries provide no statistics that would support a direct damage comparison.
How do you obtain and repair it?
Craft it with two iron ingots and a stick. An anvil repair using an iron ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments. Combining two swords adds their durability plus 5%; an anvil preserves enchantments. The supported Java loot and enchanted weaponsmith trade offer additional ways to find one, but crafting remains a direct replacement route.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- A flexible melee weapon with multiple combat enchantment paths, but Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are mutually exclusive.
- Full-strength Java attacks require cooldown recovery.
- Breaking non-instant blocks spends two durability per block.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Attacking repeatedly before the Java attack cooldown recovers and expecting full damage.
- Trying to combine Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods.
- Using the sword as a routine block-breaking tool without accounting for two durability per block.
