Understand Netherite Axe
Useful when…
- Use it for wood-related blocks, stripping logs or bamboo, and scraping copper.
- Use its heavy melee hit and shield disruption when a slower attack cadence suits the encounter.
What does the upgrade provide?
A diamond axe becomes a Netherite Axe through smithing with a Netherite Ingot and Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. The upgrade increases durability, mining efficiency, and attack damage, and makes the dropped item resistant to fire. The axe has 2031 durability and mines axe-mineable blocks at speed 9 while providing correct drops for those blocks.
How does it handle in Java combat?
The Java axe deals 10 damage at attack speed 1.0, with a one-second recovery time. Attacks against shield users disable shield use for 5 seconds. Each weapon attack consumes 2 durability, compared with 1 for breaking a block or stripping/scraping. Its high hit damage comes with slower recovery and lower sustained damage per second than a sword of the same tier.
Which tasks benefit from it?
The axe breaks wood-related blocks faster than other tools in its category. Using it on logs, wood, or bamboo strips them; using it on waxed copper removes wax, while using it on unwaxed oxidized copper removes an oxidation level. Efficiency supports mining speed. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive, so choose according to whether you want increased drops or the block itself. For combat, Java-supported options include Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods, which are mutually exclusive.
How do you maintain it, and what should you avoid assuming?
An anvil repair with a Netherite Ingot restores 25% of maximum durability, rounded down, and preserves enchantments; anvil combination also preserves them. Crafting or grindstone combination adds remaining durability plus 5% of maximum but does not preserve enchantments. Do not treat sword-only enchantments listed in the reference, such as Looting, Knockback, Fire Aspect, or Sweeping Edge, as Java axe options; those entries are explicitly limited to swords. Trims and other cosmetic changes are not stated as upgrades to its combat or mining performance.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The upgrade improves durability, mining efficiency, attack damage, and fire resistance for the dropped item, at the cost of a Netherite Ingot and smithing template.
- Its strong Java hit and shield disable are balanced by one-second recovery and 2 durability spent per attack.
- Fortune and Silk Touch serve incompatible drop goals; decide before enchanting.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using it as though it has a sword's faster recovery; Java attacks recover over one second.
- Forgetting weapon attacks consume 2 durability while tool actions generally consume 1.
- Assuming sword-only enchantments listed in the reference can be applied to the Java axe.
