Understand Loyalty
Useful when…
- Retrieve a trident after landing a ranged hit or throwing it into a block.
- Reduce return travel time with higher Loyalty levels.
When does the trident return?
After a Loyalty trident hits an entity, it begins returning; after a block hit, it starts returning 5 ticks later. Its return speed depends on level: roughly 16.67 blocks per second at I, 33.33 at II, and 50 at III. The effect rule adds 1 per level above I to return acceleration. The trident travels toward its owner in a straight line and can pass through blocks and entities without hitting them while returning.
When should you consider each level?
Loyalty is supported on the trident, with a maximum level of III. Any level provides a return after a block or entity impact; the higher levels make that return faster. This is useful when retrieving a thrown trident promptly matters. Its anvil book multiplier is 1 and item multiplier is 2; these are combination multipliers rather than a complete experience-price calculation.
What can interrupt retrieval?
In Java Edition, throwing a Loyalty trident into the void effectively destroys it because it has no block or entity impact to trigger its return. If the player crosses dimensions while it is returning, it stays in the dimension where it was thrown and resumes when the player returns. A full inventory makes it circle the player until a slot is freed. If the player dies or enters spectator mode during the return, it drops as an item and can despawn.
Which other trident use is incompatible?
Loyalty and Riptide are mutually exclusive. If commands combine them, Riptide takes priority and negates Loyalty. Choose the intended trident function before investing in either enchantment; Loyalty is for retrieving thrown tridents, while the source specifically identifies Riptide as the incompatible alternative.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Higher levels make the return faster, but do not remove the need for a block or entity impact to trigger it.
- A full inventory can leave the returning trident circling instead of being collected.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Throwing a Loyalty trident into the void in Java Edition and expecting it to return.
- Leaving no free inventory slot and expecting a circling trident to enter a full inventory.
- Combining Loyalty with Riptide and expecting Loyalty to remain active.
