Understand Riptide
Useful when…
- Move quickly through rain or water, and gain height by aiming the throw straight upward.
- Travel farther by launching from higher up or while sprinting or sprint-swimming.
- Propel yourself while wearing elytra in rain or over water.
When it works and how far it launches
Riptide is for movement rather than ordinary trident throwing. You can use it when standing in water or exposed to rain; it also works while underwater. The stated launch-distance formula is 6 × level + 3 blocks in rain or while standing in water, and 4 × level + 3 blocks underwater. At levels I, II, and III, those formulas yield 9, 15, and 21 blocks in rain or standing water, and 7, 11, and 15 blocks underwater. These are formula outputs, not guarantees of a particular route: aiming upward increases height, while launching from higher up or while sprinting or sprint-swimming increases travel distance. Rain availability matters: it cannot be used where rain does not occur unless you are in water. [mc-31:record] [mc-31:reading]
Combat contact and durability
If the propelled player collides with a mob or another player, the trident deals throwing damage, including critical damage if the player is falling, and the player’s movement stops abruptly. The collision can bypass a shield’s defense. A mob collision costs one durability in either edition; in Java, the throw itself also costs one durability, so a damaging collision costs two durability total. While moving, the trident never leaves the player’s hand. [mc-31:reading]
Leveling and anvil cost
The enchantment has a maximum level of III. Its explicit spin-attack-strength rule adds 1.5 at level I, then another 0.75 for each level above I, for values of 1.5, 2.25, and 3.0 at levels I, II, and III. The input does not specify how that strength translates into damage, so treat it as a listed attack property rather than a damage total. Riptide’s anvil multipliers are 2 for a book and 4 for an item; these are the multipliers, not a complete price by themselves. [mc-31:record]
Restrictions and practical mistakes
Riptide cannot be combined with Loyalty or Channeling. Loyalty conflicts with its hand-retaining use, while Channeling conflicts because the trident does not land and lightning would strike at the player’s position. Do not expect a Riptide trident to serve as a conventional thrown trident, or to work in a dry location where rain is unavailable. Holding a second Riptide trident in the off-hand does not double the launch; only the main-hand trident is used. [mc-31:record] [mc-31:reading]
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The movement effect is useful only when rain or water conditions permit activation.
- Using it as a collision attack stops movement and spends durability; in Java, a mob hit costs two durability including the throw.
- Choosing Riptide excludes Loyalty and Channeling.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to activate it in a dry area where rain is unavailable.
- Expecting to throw the trident normally or combine it with Loyalty or Channeling.
- Expecting an off-hand Riptide trident to double the launch.
- Ignoring durability loss when colliding with a mob, especially the two-point Java cost including the throw.
