Understand Wind Burst
Useful when…
- Chaining falling mace attacks when each hit can meet the activation condition.
- Setting up a smash with a short fall, wind charge, or Jump Boost, provided the 1.5-block fall threshold is met at impact.
When does Wind Burst activate?
The direct attacker must be non-flying and have a fall distance of at least 1.5 blocks when the mace hit lands. Ordinary grounded attacks do not trigger the enchantment. A jump from a single block can provide roughly two blocks of fall height if you strike just before landing; wind charges and Jump Boost can also help set up a qualifying fall, but do not waive the threshold.
What does the launch enable?
A qualifying hit creates an explosion that launches the attacker upward. The reference gives approximate launch heights of 8, 16, and 24 blocks at levels I, II, and III; the structured effect lists multipliers of 1.2×, 1.75×, and 2.2× for those levels. The launch can enable another smash, but that follow-up must independently meet the fall and non-flying conditions. In Java Edition, Blast Protection reduces Wind Burst's effect. The effect can also interact with redstone objects such as levers and wooden doors.
Levels and anvil investment
Wind Burst supports the mace and has a maximum level of III. Higher levels have stronger listed knockback multipliers, which can help create more room for another falling attack. Its anvil book cost multiplier is 2 and its anvil item cost multiplier is 4; these are cost multipliers, not launch values.
Obtaining the book
The supplied reference describes level I enchanted books from trial-chamber ominous vaults and gives an approximate 5.5% chance per vault activation with an ominous key. This is a rare way to obtain the enchantment, so the chain-attack use depends on whether you acquire a book and can meet the fall condition consistently.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Its launch can support repeated smash attacks, but each strike needs at least 1.5 blocks of fall distance.
- Higher levels increase the listed launch multiplier, while the enchantment remains conditional on falling mace hits.
- In Java Edition, Blast Protection reduces the launch effect.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a grounded attack to trigger Wind Burst.
- Striking before the direct attacker has fallen 1.5 blocks or while flying.
- Assuming the launch automatically makes the next hit a qualifying smash.
