Understand Dawning Frost
Useful when…
- A catalyst wielder who regularly hits with Charged Attacks and benefits from temporary Elemental Mastery.
- A build that can also land Elemental Skill hits to gain the separately described 10-second Elemental Mastery effect.
Two separate hit conditions
A Charged Attack hit on an opponent grants 72 Elemental Mastery for 10 seconds at R1. An Elemental Skill hit grants 48 Elemental Mastery for 10 seconds at R1. At R5, these amounts become 144 and 96. The conditions are hits, not merely using the attack or Skill; the supplied effect does not specify additional behavior for overlapping windows, stacking, or refreshing.
When to consider it
Consider Dawning Frost when a catalyst wielder can land the relevant hits and Elemental Mastery benefits their damage. Its CRIT DMG secondary stat may also fit a damage build, while the passive adds temporary Elemental Mastery after the two specified hit types. A Thousand Floating Dreams instead grants the wielder party-composition-based Elemental Mastery or elemental DMG bonuses and shares Elemental Mastery with other nearby party members. Angelos' Heptades has an ATK secondary stat and requires the wielder to create a Shield to trigger its party damage and Energy effects. Those conditions make them distinct choices, not direct replacements for Dawning Frost's hit-triggered bonuses.
Progression and refinement
Weapon ascension progresses through six stages; listed examples include 5,000 Mora for stage 0 to 1 and 45,000 Mora for stage 5 to 6, alongside materials. Refinement consumes a duplicate copy and Mora. The listed Mora costs range from 1,000 for R1 to R2 to 8,000 for R4 to R5. Each refinement raises the Charged Attack bonus by 18 Elemental Mastery and the Skill hit bonus by 12. Refinement is most relevant when the wielder can use both triggers and makes good use of the temporary stat increases.
Timing and trigger pitfalls
Both bonuses last 10 seconds, and each requires the corresponding attack to hit an opponent. Using a Charged Attack without a hit does not meet its condition, and Skill use alone does not meet the Skill condition. Do not assume that the two effects stack or refresh in a particular way; only their separate triggers, amounts, and durations are specified. Apprentice's Notes is a basic 1-star catalyst with no listed secondary stat or refinement effect, so it does not offer these Elemental Mastery windows.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- The Elemental Mastery bonuses are temporary and require hits from the specified attack types.
- The Skill hit bonus is smaller than the Charged Attack hit bonus at each listed refinement.
- Refinement consumes duplicate copies.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Skill use with the required Skill hit on an opponent.
- Assuming a Charged Attack grants its bonus without hitting an opponent.
- Assuming the two Elemental Mastery effects stack or refresh in an unspecified way.
