Understand Fang of the Mountain King
Useful when…
- A claymore wielder whose damage includes Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst hits.
- A party that can trigger Burning or Burgeon to help build Canopy’s Favor stacks.
How Canopy’s Favor stacks work
Hitting an opponent with an Elemental Skill grants one stack, no more often than once every 0.5 seconds. When a nearby party member triggers Burning or Burgeon, the wielder gains three stacks; that trigger can occur once every 2 seconds and can count even if the triggering party member is off-field. Each stack increases the wielder’s Elemental Skill and Burst damage for 6 seconds. At Refinement 1, each stack adds 10%, and the maximum is six independently counted stacks. The per-stack increase reaches 20% at Refinement 5. These are stack-based Skill and Burst bonuses, not a general increase to every attack type.
When the passive fits
The CRIT Rate secondary stat is paired with a passive focused specifically on Skill and Burst damage. A wielder who lands Skill hits can build stacks directly; a party that triggers Burning or Burgeon can supply three at a time, including through an off-field trigger. This makes those reactions relevant to the weapon’s condition, but the supplied effect does not say that every party arrangement will maintain six stacks continuously. The listed alternatives emphasize other conditions: Ultimate Overlord’s Mega Magic Sword supplies ATK and Energy Recharge, while A Teaspoon of Transcendence requires Charged Attack hits for its named reaction damage bonus. A Thousand Blazing Suns activates its bonus through Skill or Burst use, then extends it with Elemental Normal or Charged Attacks and has an additional Nightsoul’s Blessing condition.
Refinement and ascension investment
Refinement increases the Skill and Burst damage bonus per stack from 10% to 20% over ranks 1–5; the six-stack cap and 6-second duration remain as described. The shown refinement steps consume another Fang of the Mountain King copy and Mora. Ascension is separate, advances through six stages, and uses its own listed materials and Mora. Refinement is most directly tied to strengthening this passive, but duplicate copies have an opportunity cost. Consider ascension for the weapon’s stage progression and weigh further refinement against retaining another copy; the inputs provide no character-specific comparison that would make one investment universally preferable.
Do not confuse stacks or damage scope
The Burning or Burgeon trigger grants three stacks, not an unlimited buff, and it is restricted by a 2-second trigger interval. Skill hits grant only one stack per qualifying trigger interval. The effect lasts 6 seconds per stack, and each stack is counted independently, so avoid treating a single trigger as six stacks or assuming a full stack count persists without further qualifying events. The bonus applies to Elemental Skill and Burst damage; it is not described as a Normal or Charged Attack bonus.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Its damage bonus is limited to Elemental Skill and Burst damage.
- Burning and Burgeon stack gains have a 2-second trigger limit.
- Refinement consumes another copy of the weapon at each listed step.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying the passive’s Skill and Burst bonus to Normal or Charged Attacks.
- Counting a Burning or Burgeon trigger as six stacks; it grants three and has a 2-second limit.
- Assuming off-field reaction triggers do not count; the effect explicitly allows them.
