Stardew Valley · Tool upgrade

Axe progression and hardwood access

Axe tiers reduce the hits needed for tree work and unlock Large Stumps or Large Logs, expanding the wood and Hardwood tasks available.

How it works

The Tools table says the Axe chops trees for wood and sap, harvests Giant Crops, and gathers Hardwood from Large Stumps or Large Logs. Its tier descriptions say the Copper Axe can chop Large Stumps and the Steel Axe can chop Large Logs; later tiers list fewer hits for trees and stumps.

When it helps

If you need to clear a Large Stump or Large Log, check which Axe tier the source lists for that obstacle. For regular tree work, compare the listed hit reductions with how often you use the tool.

The tradeoff

The upgrade requires materials and temporarily removes the Axe from use; the access and speed benefits depend on your planned tasks.

Your next step

Check whether your next goal involves a Large Stump, Large Log, or routine tree clearing, then consult the tier table.

Read the supporting references

A focused reference to tool upgrades, skill progression, Farming professions, and Mastery in Stardew Valley. The supplied Skills history lists changes through version 1.6.9; Tools includes version notes for specific changes, but does not establish the version of all mechanics described here. Guidance explains the referenced mechanics; it is not a tested damage ranking. Check the stated edition and source version before applying a patch-specific detail.
