Hoe area upgrades

Upgraded Hoes can till multiple tiles when powered up, expanding from a short line to a larger area as the tool tier rises.

How it works

The Tools guide describes the Hoe as useful for tilling soil and digging Artifact Spots. Charging an upgraded Hoe increases its area of effect: Copper and Steel extend a line, while Gold and Iridium cover rectangular areas. The source says all Hoes use the same energy whether powered up or used to till one tile.

When it helps

If you prepare many adjacent tiles, consider whether a larger charged area fits that work. If your tilling is occasional or spread out, the extra area may matter less; the supplied sources do not compare farm layouts.

The tradeoff

Larger coverage can reduce repeated swings for grouped work, but requires progressing through material tiers and spending time without the tool.

Your next step

Check whether your regular tilling is concentrated enough to use a charged area before upgrading.

Read the supporting references

A focused reference to tool upgrades, skill progression, Farming professions, and Mastery in Stardew Valley. The supplied Skills history lists changes through version 1.6.9; Tools includes version notes for specific changes, but does not establish the version of all mechanics described here. Guidance explains the referenced mechanics; it is not a tested damage ranking. Check the stated edition and source version before applying a patch-specific detail.
