Understand Pathocyst
Useful when…
- Use normal attacks for close melee with a listed 30% status chance and Viral damage.
- Throw or charge the glaive for direct ranged attacks and distinct bounce or recall explosions.
- Consider it when Viral damage and the chance to release seeking maggots are useful to your weapon choice.
What makes Pathocyst distinctive?
Pathocyst requires Mastery Rank 9. Its normal attack deals 57 Impact, 61 Slash, 55 Puncture, and 89 Viral damage, totaling 262. It lists 15% critical chance, a 2.1× critical multiplier, and 30% status chance. Its description says strikes infect targets with Viral pathogens and that it may discharge enemy-seeking maggots in flight or on contact.
What are the throw and explosion modes?
A normal throw lists 17% critical chance, a 2.3× multiplier, and 33% status chance; it deals 49 Impact, 78 Slash, 43 Puncture, and 118 Viral damage. A charged throw takes 1.2 seconds and lists 21% critical chance, a 2.5× multiplier, and 35% status chance, dealing 127 Impact, 135 Slash, 121 Puncture, and 193 Viral. Normal bounce explosions deal 393 Viral damage with 50% reduction at the 4.9-range endpoint; normal recall explosions deal 786 Viral with no listed falloff reduction. Charged bounce and recall explosions deal 786 and 1,572 Viral respectively, with the charged bounce sharing the bounce falloff and the charged recall listing no reduction. Keep these direct and area modes distinct.
When should you invest in it?
The normal attack's 30% status chance and built-in Viral damage make status-oriented investment a reasonable direction. Charged throws list improved critical chance and multiplier over normal throws, but have a 1.2-second charge time. Pathocyst has two listed polarities, Madurai and Vazarin; polarity is relevant only when fitting a compatible mod. Coda Pathocyst is a named comparison candidate, but its entry only says it has increased damage and critical/status properties and enhanced miasmites; it does not provide detailed attack modes here, so those statements alone do not establish an exact replacement or full mode-by-mode comparison.
What should you avoid assuming?
Do not treat maggot release as guaranteed on every strike, since it is described as occasional. Bounce explosions lose damage with distance, while recall explosions list no reduction. Charged throws have a 1.2-second charge time and are separate from normal throws; their larger listed values do not remove that handling cost.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Charged throws have stronger listed damage and critical/status values but require 1.2 seconds to charge.
- Bounce explosions fall off with distance; recall explosions list no reduction.
- Maggot release is occasional, not guaranteed on each hit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every strike spawns maggots.
- Combining normal, charged, bounce, and recall damage into one attack value.
- Ignoring the 1.2-second charged-throw time or bounce falloff.
