Understand Orvius
Useful when…
- Use normal attacks for close melee, or throw it to strike at range.
- Charge throws when the stronger listed charged attack and explosion modes justify the 1.2-second charge.
- Recall a thrown disc for its distinct recall explosion, which has no listed falloff reduction.
What are Orvius's attack modes?
Orvius requires Mastery Rank 5. Its normal attack deals 39 Impact, 9.75 Puncture, and 146.25 Slash, with 18% critical chance, a 2× multiplier, and 18% status chance. The normal throw is a separate mode: it lists 20% critical chance, a 2.2× multiplier, 20% status chance, and 35 shot speed, dealing 43 Impact, 10.75 Puncture, and 161.25 Slash. A charged throw takes 1.2 seconds and lists 22% critical chance, a 2.4× multiplier, 22% status chance, and 35 shot speed; it deals 85.75 Impact, 21.5 Puncture, and 321.75 Slash. The weapon's listed melee range is 1.3, with 0.7 follow-through.
What happens on a bounce or recall?
A normal throw's bounce explosion deals 293 Blast damage, with falloff from 0 to 4 range and 40% reduction at the endpoint; its recall explosion deals 586 Blast damage and lists no falloff reduction. A charged throw's bounce explosion instead deals 585 Cold damage, with the same 0-to-4 range and 40% endpoint reduction. Its charged recall explosion deals 1,170 Cold damage and also lists no falloff reduction. These are separate explosion modes from the direct thrown attacks. A hover attack is also listed: 75 Cold damage, 60% status chance, and 20% critical chance.
How should you choose a throw?
The charged throw's listed direct damage, critical chance, and critical multiplier are higher than the normal throw's, at the cost of a 1.2-second charge. The charged bounce and recall effects also switch to Cold damage from the normal throw's Blast explosions. Choose the mode based on whether you can make use of a charged attack and its Cold-damage explosions. The Glaive comparison entry describes a thrown boomerang weapon, while Orvius has explicit charged and recall explosion modes in its detailed attacks; the candidates are not interchangeable on the evidence given.
What should you watch for?
Orvius's normal and charged throws have different impact profiles: normal throws generate Blast explosions on bounce and recall, while charged throws generate Cold explosions. The recall explosion has no listed falloff reduction, but the bounce explosion reduces damage toward its 4-range endpoint. Keep those modes separate when deciding whether to charge or recall.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Charged throws have stronger listed direct and explosion damage, but require 1.2 seconds to charge.
- Bounce explosions have damage falloff; recall explosions list no falloff reduction.
- Normal and charged throws produce different explosion damage types.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating normal and charged throws as the same attack mode.
- Assuming bounce and recall explosions have identical damage or falloff.
- Forgetting that charged throws have a 1.2-second charge time.
