Understand Lunge
Useful when…
- Cover ground with a jab-triggered movement burst.
- Use the gained momentum before a charge attack when there is room to build the attack.
How does the jab trigger work?
Lunge applies an impulse on a successful jab, not on a charge attack. Its forward impulse is 0.458 blocks per tick at level I, 0.916 at II, and 1.374 at III. For players, the corresponding exhaustion is 4, 8, and 12 per lunge; each use also costs 1 durability at every level. The spear can be used to jab and then begin a charge attack, carrying the gained velocity into that attack if there is enough distance for the charge's activation delay.
What conditions restrict player use?
A player needs at least 7 hunger points, which is the threshold described for sprinting; exhaustion consumes saturation first, then hunger. Lunge does not activate while riding a mount or vehicle, gliding with an elytra, or touching water. It also does not activate if the player has 5 or fewer hunger points. The effect rule excludes fall-flying and being in water, and allows players with sufficient food, creative players, or non-player entities.
How should you weigh levels and spear choice?
Lunge is available on the listed spear tiers and reaches level III. Each level adds another 0.458 blocks per tick of impulse, but also adds 4 exhaustion per player use; the 1 durability loss remains fixed per use. Higher attack speed lets a spear jab more often, and the reading notes that lower-tier spears can therefore use Lunge more often. For longer movement sequences, the higher-level impulse must be weighed against its greater food cost.
What does it not do?
Lunge is a jab effect, so it does not directly propel a charge attack. It does not activate in water, while mounted, or while elytra-gliding. Non-player mobs do not use it for mobility; they use Lunge spears in melee range, and zombies, zombie villagers, husks, piglins, and zombified piglins only perform charge attacks, so they never activate it. The enchantment is reported compatible with Mending in the supplied Java reading.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Higher levels increase both movement impulse and player exhaustion; durability loss stays at 1 per use.
- The burst requires a successful jab and has movement-state and hunger conditions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Lunge to trigger on a charge attack instead of a jab.
- Using it with 5 or fewer hunger points, in water, while mounted, or while elytra-gliding.
- Ignoring its level-scaled exhaustion and per-use durability loss.
