Understand Depth Strider
Useful when…
- Traveling through rivers, oceans, and other water areas
- Reducing the effect of flowing water pushing you while standing still
Movement effect
Each level adds one-third water movement efficiency. At level III, swimming speed reaches walking speed on land; levels above III provide no further speed increase. Depth Strider also reduces how quickly flowing water pushes a stationary player. With Depth Strider III, the Speed potion effect changes swimming the same way it changes walking.
Equipment and useful pairing
It normally applies to boots and works only while the enchanted item is equipped in the feet slot. In Java, its benefit combines with Dolphin's Grace, allowing faster movement through water. Vertical movement is unaffected, so it will not speed ascent or descent in a water column.
Level choice and incompatibility
Level III is the practical speed cap: higher levels add no water speed. Depth Strider is mutually exclusive with Frost Walker in ordinary use. Favor it when swimming and water travel matter more than Frost Walker's alternative; it is a mobility enchantment rather than a defensive effect.
Limitations and tradeoffs
- Improves horizontal movement in water but not vertical movement.
- Level III reaches the stated speed cap; levels beyond it add no speed.
- Cannot normally be combined with Frost Walker.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting Depth Strider to speed vertical movement in water.
- Equipping it outside the feet slot and expecting it to work.
- Investing past level III for additional swimming speed.
